The Smoothed Complexity of Computing Kemeny and Slater Rankings

چکیده

The computational complexity of winner determination under common voting rules is a classical and fundamental topic in the field social choice. Previous work has established NP-hardness some commonly-studied rules, such as Kemeny rule Slater rule. In recent position paper, Baumeister, Hogrebe, Rothe (2020) questioned relevance worst-case nature choice proposed to conduct smoothed analysis (Spielman Teng 2009) Blaser Manthey’s (2015) framework. this we develop first results for voting. We prove hardness using runtime analysis, parameterized typical-case easiness result Kemeny. also make an attempt applying framework contexts by proving that categorizes always-exponential-time brute force search algorithm being poly-time, natural noise model based on well-studied Mallows statistics. Overall, our show challenging fruitful topic.

Improved Bounds for Computing Kemeny Rankings

Voting (or rank aggregation) is a general method for aggregating the preferences of multiple agents. One voting rule of particular interest is the Kemeny rule, which minimizes the number of cases where the final ranking disagrees with a vote on the order of two alternatives. Unfortunately, Kemeny rankings are NP-hard to compute. Recent work on computing Kemeny rankings has focused on producing ...

Computing Slater Rankings Using Similarities among Candidates

Voting (or rank aggregation) is a general method for aggregating the preferences of multiple agents. One important voting rule is the Slater rule. It selects a ranking of the alternatives (or candidates) to minimize the number of pairs of candidates such that the ranking disagrees with the pairwise majority vote on these two candidates. The use of the Slater rule has been hindered by a lack of ...

Computing Kemeny Rankings, Parameterized by the Average KT-Distance

The computation of Kemeny rankings is central to many applications in the context of rank aggregation. Unfortunately, the problem is NP-hard. Extending our previous work [AAIM 2008], we show that the Kemeny score of an election can be computed efficiently whenever the average pairwise distance between two input votes is not too large. In other words, Kemeny Score is fixed-parameter tractable wi...

Complexity of the Winner Determination Problem in Judgment Aggregation: Kemeny, Slater, Tideman, Young

Judgment aggregation is a collective decision making framework where the opinions of a group of agents is combined into a collective opinion. This can be done using many different judgment aggregation procedures. We study the computational complexity of computing the group opinion for several of the most prominent judgment aggregation procedures. In particular, we show that the complexity of th...
